Hello friends, I found this when i was reading an old "digit's" fast track to computing an archive.it is about Herman Hollerith, he is a person who found "Tabulating Machine Company"(TMC) in 1896, later he merged with another company to become the most famous IBM (International Business Machine).

It sounds ridiculous now now, but in the year 1880s United States census took almost 8 years to complete as its overall computation was done by 'HAND'!! The US govt. therefore, in anticipation of the increased population, put out a competition to find a better way. Its obvious that, the did not wanted the census work to take soo long a it used to occur for every 10 years.
So an employee of the census department called Herman Hollerith, borrowing Charle's Babbage's idea of "Punched Cards for data storage".
Guess what!! due to this invention the thing what might have taken longer than 8 years just took SIX weeks to complete, just six weeks..
Hollerith won the competition, but needful to say He found "Tabulating Machine Company" in 1896.This was quite a success in that time and Herman Hollerith signed a contract with the New York Central Railroad to supply 'punched-card equipment' to process up to four million waybills, so like this TMC grew well.
In 1911 four corporations, including Hollerith's firm, merged to form the Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation (CTR)Under the presidency of Thomas J. Watson, it was renamed International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) in 1924.Herman Hollerith is called as "Father Of Information Processing".
So one of the world's largest computer companies and systems integrators were born...
